REHOMING (see active cases below)

Updated: Aug 7

Tortoises are challenging animals and require very specialised care, including the correct diet and housing facilities. We strive to ensure that all homes meet these requirements.

Regularly Updated

The Tortoise Trust has been involved in finding new homes for tortoises that the current keeper is unable to continue with since the early 1980's. In that time we have successfully homed many thousands of animals. It is important to note the following:

  • All rehomings are 100% non-commercial and no fees or charges are ever made. We do not 'sell or trade' tortoises or turtles under any circumstances.

  • All rehoming cases must fully comply with laws on endangered species, for example, CITES regulations, Lacy Act (USA), etc.

  • We also have a Facebook group specifically dedicated to rehoming. See this link. That particular group only handles rehoming cases within the UK, however (due to CITES restrictions). We do have a worldwide membership and readership, though, so we have now added this section where cases from other localities can be included in addition to publicising cases on that group.

  • We need to be completely assured and satisfied that those who apply to adopt animals have an adequate level of knowledge of the species concerned, the correct facilities, and the dedication to provide long-term care. This means providing suitable housing, diet and protection from predators, etc. We will ask to see proof of this (photos and video). If you are a long-term keeper with extensive experience or have adopted from us previously, that will be taken into account. If this is not the case, preference will be given to applicants who have successfuly completed one of our courses, either the Beginner Course or the Advanced Course.

  • We also require that applicants to adopt are a paying subscriber. This helps us to verify your identity and contact details. Most importantly, it allows us to stay in contact and update you with new and relevant information, including health alerts and other critical advice.

Please note that the vast number of animals we rehome are UK based but in a limited number of special cases we can list and rehome animals in other countries too.

If these conditions are met, you may contact us using the form below CITING THE REFERENCE NUMBER of the case where you are applying to adopt.

REFERENCE WOODBRIDGE

He was the childhood pet of my sister-in-law. Her parents were given him about 40 years ago, when he was already a few years old. When they were no longer able to look after him (about 5 years ago), we took him and have had him since. He free ranges in our garden and hibernates for 6 months of the year (could actually be a Hermann's female - clarifying with owner!). Woodbridge Suffolk.
